follow the absorbent cotton trail

In the 1995 remake of Sabrina, the chauffeur delays telling his daughter (away for the year in Paris) that her beloved crush, David, is engaged to another woman. Rosa, the chatty maid, offers him a simple way to phrase his heartbreaking news:

"You say, Darling Sabrina: Your life is a dream, and now it is over."

WELL. Going to Edel was a dream for me, and now, it's over. Since the wee hours of Monday morning we've been living and walking on towels, sheets and any other washable cotton surface in the hopes of keeping the products of the stomach flu off the upholstery.

I've only been mildly successful.

But! Things could be worse, a lot worse. I'm choosing to be grateful for the things I have: a house, running water, a washing machine, a full bottle of Resolve, and the Costco pack of Lysol wipes. I think I also have the DVD of Sabrina stashed somewhere in my basement. Nothing says "balm to the Edel-forfeitted soul" like Greg Kinnear in a tux.

To all the ladies I was hoping to finally meet in person: I'll catch ya next year.

To Hallie and Jennifer: PLEASE REPEAT THIS EVENT NEXT YEAR.

To my incredible friends who are still attending: Girls, drink an O'Doul's for me. And from 2,000 miles away, I'll say: Cheers.

  1. Oh no Mary! Are you sure?! Maybe they'll magically cease vomiting in a hour and return to perfect health? I'll miss you!

  2. From another girl who has to miss Edel this year, I second your request to Jen and Hallie! Sorry you can't go, either. I hope the sickness passes so you can still enjoy your weekend!

  3. Oh no! Stomach bugs that destroy dreams of Edel are the worst. Sabrina, on the other hand, is the best. I watch it at least twice a year.

  4. I'm so sad and sorry! Stomach bugs are so hard. I've been completely traumatized by them (I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to all things vomit.). So many prayers for you all and I just need to figure out another way to get to meet wonderful you! And thank you for mentioning Sabrina. I never knew how much I missed this movie till you mentioned it in your post. It's a favorite that always gets put aside for another time.

  5. Oh, I'm so sorry! We had a nasty stomach bug ourselves, just a few weeks ago. Isn't that sort of thing supposed to wait for the winter?! I hope you're all healthy soon!

    1. Yeah--the sheer audacity of July to hurl a stomach bug at me. I'm calling the whole month a mulligan and crawling in a corner until August. Thank you for the well wishes!

  6. When I experience this level of suck I skip over Sabrina and head straight for the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice. It's the only thing to do, really. Makes the waiting for the barfing to stop slightly easier!

So sorry that you're missing Edel:( I'm hoping to go next year so maybe I'll see you there.

  7. Bummer. I am glad it has been slightly successful keeping the stomach flu off of the furniture though!!

  8. Oh no! That's horrible! Hopefully the path will be clear next year! I'm really hoping they do it again next year too! (And here's hoping everyone is better at your house really, really soon!)

  9. :( I am so so sorry. I'm missing Edel too, but at least I dealt with it early on. I hope everyone is better soon.
